About Estadio Azteca
Estadio Azteca is the most storied soccer stadium in the Americas and the only venue in history to have hosted three FIFA World Cup tournaments. It opens World Cup 2026 on June 11 with the tournament's first match, and it will host additional group stage matches. The stadium has been the site of some of the most famous moments in soccer history: Pelé won his second World Cup here in 1970, Diego Maradona scored both the infamous "Hand of God" goal and the "Goal of the Century" here in 1986, and Argentina defeated West Germany in the 1986 final on this pitch. Sitting at 2,200 meters above sea level, it is the highest-altitude venue in the tournament — a factor that historically affects match outcomes.
